Plan for Marketing Changes with Scenarios and Triggers

Updated 30 October 2026: Rewritten around a specific planning or review task. Unsupported outcomes and attributed campaign stories were removed; examples are hypothetical. The original publication date remains.

A useful future plan explains how the team will respond if conditions change. It does not need to predict a whole market with unsupported certainty.

How is a scenario different from a forecast?

A scenario is an explicitly hypothetical situation used to prepare decisions. A forecast makes a claim about what is expected to happen and needs its method, source, date and uncertainty. Do not present one as the other.

Keep confirmed product availability separate from announced or imagined capabilities.

What should a scenario contain?

Define the change, affected customer task, assumption, response option and evidence trigger. Limit the exercise to decisions the business can actually make.

  • What might change?
  • Which existing process would be affected?
  • What observation would confirm the need to act?
  • Who decides and what resources are required?
  • What remains useful if the scenario never occurs?

What does a practical example look like?

Hypothetical scenario: a channel changes its reporting or access conditions. The business verifies the official information, checks the affected account and reviews its measurement definitions before changing the budget. The scenario does not claim that a particular platform will make that change.

A second useful contingency is a customer journey failure: define the pause, correction and recovery route before it is needed.

How should the plan be maintained?

Review it when the named trigger appears or a verified business fact changes. Replace unsupported assumptions with evidence and retire scenarios that no longer help a decision.

For content, Google’s people-first guidance reinforces the need for useful, trustworthy information rather than speculative pages produced only for search coverage.

A practical prompt to adapt

“Build three scenarios from [business objective], [current constraints], [verified facts] and [uncertain dependencies]. For each, state the trigger, owner, response and reversible first step. Label every scenario hypothetical and do not invent product roadmaps or market growth figures.”
