It is inaccurate to say that Google discounts every reciprocal link. Two organisations can have legitimate reasons to refer to each other. The relevant concern is a scheme designed primarily to manipulate search rankings.
What does Google identify as link spam?
Google’s link-spam policy includes excessive link exchanges, paid ranking links and automated link creation. Calling a placement a partnership does not change a manipulative arrangement. Qualify paid placements with the appropriate sponsored or nofollow attribute.
Evaluate the reference in context
A supplier may explain a real integration and a customer may describe using that supplier. Readers can benefit from both references. In contrast, a page created only to exchange keyword links with unrelated businesses gives a prospective customer little help.
Before suggesting a placement, ask: what does this audience learn, why is this destination relevant, and would the reference still make sense without a ranking benefit? Record any commercial relationship rather than disguising it as independent editorial coverage.
Build something worth referencing
For a service business, useful material might be a carefully documented implementation, an original checklist or a project explanation with permissioned evidence. Share it with relevant people without requiring a reciprocal link. Publication, referral traffic and ranking improvement are not guaranteed.
SEM Lion’s content strategy service can help plan material around real customer questions. The objective is useful discovery and qualified enquiries, measured over time.
